Whats The Difference Between Psoriasis And Eczema?

Posted by Abeola Johnson on

Skin conditions are on the rise. As if these chronic skin conditions weren’t hard enough to live with, they can also be the most confusing and easy to misdiagnose. Psoriasis and eczema can be very close in similarities. We’ll look at the difference and how to distinguish eczema and psoriasis, and some recommend products to treat these headaches of a skin condition.

The basics of Eczema

Eczema also known as atopic dermatitis, is chronic inflammation of the skin, which presents itself as dry, itchy cracked and sore. Skin may be scaly, blistered, oozing, or crusty. You may see rough, leathery patches that are sometimes dark. It can also cause swelling. Eczema can causes intense itching, some sufferers scratch till they bleed and tear the skin. Eczema often appears on parts of your body that bend, like your inner elbow or behind your knees. You can have it on your neck, wrists, and ankles. Babies sometimes get it on their chin, cheeks, scalp, chest, back, arms, and legs. It is most common in children but can present itself for the first time in adults.

Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune skin condition that results in the over production of skin cells. The T cells attack healthy skin, and as a result the new skin cell start to produce too quickly and as they are pushed to the skins surface, they pile up, resulting in plaques. Psoriasis presents itself as thick, red/silvery scales, rashy raised inflamed patches. Psoriasis is most commonly found on the knees, elbows and scalp and face, lower back, palms of your hands and soles of your feet. Psoriasis can run in families, although the exact role genetics plays in causing psoriasis is unclear. It’s not contagious, and can typically begin in early adulthood.

Both eczema and psoriasis can be seen differently on one another. If you are still having difficulty in distinguishing which condition you have, we advise you seek an assessment with a dermatologist.
